Keyboard shortcuts

Every key the editor answers to — tools, editing, nodes, zoom and the stitch preview — and what the mouse does with Shift, Alt and Ctrl held.

Updated October 31, 2026

The editor's keys work while the canvas has them — not while you type in a field or a dialog, menu or list is open. Save and Open work from a field too. The menus and the right-click menu show each key beside its command, written the way your computer writes it.

On a Mac, ⌘ takes the place of Ctrl and ⌥ (Option) of Alt; Shift is ⇧. On a German keyboard Ctrl is Strg and Shift Umschalt.

The Shapes tool, Lettering, Monogram and the Catalogue have no key. Hold Space and drag to pan with any tool, or drag with the middle mouse button.

Files and editing

KeyOn a MacWhat it does
Ctrl+S⌘SSave
Ctrl+Shift+S⌘⇧SSave As…
Ctrl+O⌘OOpen / Manage…
Ctrl+Z⌘ZUndo
Ctrl+Shift+Z⌘⇧ZRedo
Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V⌘C, ⌘X, ⌘VCopy, Cut, Paste — a paste lands a little to the side; an SVG or a picture copied in another program is imported, or traced into an empty design (Paste it in)
Ctrl+Alt+V⌘⌥VPaste in place, where it was copied, in another design too
Ctrl+Shift+C⌘⇧CCopy stitch settings
Ctrl+Shift+V⌘⇧VPaste stitch settings onto the selection
Ctrl+A⌘ASelect all
Delete or Backspace⌫Delete the selection
EscEscDrop the selection and go back to the Select tool; first ends Show only selection and leaves a group you are editing

File ▸ New has no key in the browser: browsers keep Ctrl+N for a new window. Copy and Paste stitch settings take their keys only while something is selected.

Selecting and arranging

KeyOn a MacWhat it does
Tab, Shift+TabTab, ⇧TabSelect the next or the previous object in the sewing order, a group as one, once you have clicked on the canvas
Arrow keysArrow keysMove the selection 0.5 mm; with Shift 5 mm. Cross stitch alone moves by whole cells: one cell, with Shift the cells nearest 5 mm (Cross stitch)
Ctrl+D⌘DDuplicate; again, the next copy takes the same step
Ctrl+G⌘GGroup two or more objects
Ctrl+Shift+G⌘⇧GUngroup
Ctrl+K⌘KCombine shapes of one thread into one
Ctrl+Shift+K⌘⇧KBreak apart
Shift+H⇧HFlip horizontally
Shift+V⇧VFlip vertically
Shift+C⇧CCentre in hoop — with nothing selected, the whole design
Ctrl+Shift+L or Ctrl+Alt+L⌘⇧L or ⌘⌥LLock the selection, or unlock it when all of it is locked
Shift+S⇧SShow only selection, and Show all again

Arrange, cut out and combine shows what Combine, Break apart and the other commands do.

The mouse with a key held

HoldWhile you…What happens
ShiftclickAdds an object to the selection, or takes it out
Altclick with the Select toolSelects the next object under the pointer, from the top down
Alt+Shiftclick with the Select toolAdds the next object down to the selection
Altdrag an objectDrags a copy; the object stays where it was. A copy of cross stitch lands whole cells away
Shiftmove an object, or drag a nodeKeeps it on the line it started on — across, or up and down, whichever way you moved further
Shiftturn with the rotate handleTurns in 15° steps
Shiftdrag a side handleSlants a path, a polygon or a line
Shiftdrag a corner handleKeeps the proportions — or, while the chain between W and H is closed, frees them
Shiftdraw a rectangle, an ellipse, or a rounded rectangle with the Shapes toolDraws a square or a circle; a rounded rectangle with even sides
Altdraw a rectangle, an ellipse or a shapeDraws it from the centre out
Shiftplace pen or polygon points, drag out or drag a node's handle, measureKeeps the line or the handle at 15° steps
Shiftdrag across a fill after Set angleKeeps the angle at 15° steps
Altdrag a line's end onto another line's endConnects the two into one line; onto its own other end, closes it
Altdrop a file on the editorInserts it into the design instead of opening it
Altplace a point, drag a node or a guide, with snapping onPuts it exactly at the pointer, without snapping
SpacedragPans
Zdrag a box, or clickZooms to the box, or one step in

The mouse wheel zooms about the pointer, faster with Ctrl; with Shift it pans sideways. On a trackpad, two fingers pan and a pinch zooms. A double-click goes one level deeper each time — into a group, then into a shape's nodes; Esc backs out.

Editing nodes

While a shape's nodes are edited — double-click it:

KeyOn a MacWhat it does
Arrow keysArrow keysMove the selected nodes 0.5 mm; with Shift 5 mm
Tab, Shift+TabTab, ⇧TabSelect the next or the previous node
Delete or Backspace⌫Delete the selected nodes
Shift+B⇧BBreak path at nodes
Shift+J⇧JJoin nodes
Shift+C⇧CCorner node
Shift+S⇧SSmooth node
Shift+Y⇧YSymmetric node

Shift-click, or Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac), adds a node to the selection or drops it, and a frame dragged on empty canvas selects every node in it. While nodes are edited, Shift+C and Shift+S set the node type instead of centring and showing only the selection. Drawing and editing explains the node types. A machine file's stitches have needle points instead of nodes: the same keys move and delete the selected stitches, Shift+J connects two runs across the jump between them, and a drag on empty canvas draws a lasso instead of a frame (Touch up a machine file).

Drawing lines, cutting and building shapes

ToolFinishCancelTake back the last point
Pen / Path, PolygonEnter or a double-clickEscBackspace or Delete
KnifeEnter or a double-click cutsEscBackspace or Delete
Shape BuilderEnter appliesEsc discards—
Pencilrelease the mouseEsc while drawing—
Guide line of a guided fillEnter or a double-clickEsc—
Set angle across a fillrelease the mouseEsc—

With the Pen, S switches Smooth on or off for the points you place next: a smooth click gives a curve through the points. In the Pen's Satin column mode, Enter after the first side goes on to the second, and Backspace before the second side's first point goes back to the first (Draw lines and curves). A guided fill's guide line, selected in the Stitch view with the Select tool, takes a point where you double-click it, and Delete removes the point you clicked, as long as two are left. With the Shape Builder, hold Alt and click or drag to remove regions. When you type into a text on the canvas, Enter or Esc finishes it and Shift+Enter starts a new line. Esc also cancels the colour pipette and closes the right-click menu.

Zoom

KeyZoom

5To the hoop

They work on the design canvas, not while only the Simulation is shown. Click the percentage in the zoom bar to type a zoom, and press Enter.

The stitch preview

In Simulation, click the handle of the bar under the preview, then:

KeyOn a MacMoves the needle
←, →←, →One stitch back or on
Shift+←, Shift+→⇧←, ⇧→100 stitches
Page Up, Page DownPage Up, Page DownBack to the start of a colour block, or on to the end of the one being sewn
Ctrl+←, Ctrl+→⌘←, ⌘→To the previous or the next trim, stop, colour change or jump
Alt+←, Alt+→⌥←, ⌥→To the previous or the next object
Home, EndHome, EndTo the first or the last stitch

The field beside Play shows the stitch the needle is at: type another number and press Enter to go there, or Esc to put the number back. The colour block's field on the second row does the same with a block number, going to where that colour begins (Step to a stitch or a colour).

Fields and lists

  • In a number field, ↑ and ↓ change the value a step, with Shift ten steps. Enter applies what you typed; in a length field Esc puts back what was there.

  • In the Layers and Sewing order panels, Shift-click selects the rows from the one you clicked last, and Ctrl-click (⌘-click) adds or drops one.

  • In a text's Names list, ↑ and ↓ show each name on the canvas, Home and End the first and the last.

  • On the right rail's left edge, ← and → make the rail wider or narrower, Home and End as narrow or as wide as it goes.
